Old, inefficient air conditioners can end up costing a lot of money because they simply aren’t running at peak efficiency any longer. In Ontario, the minimum SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) permitted for new installations is 13. We sell units ranging from 13 SEER to more than 20 SEER. If you are moving from an 8 SEER unit (maybe 20 years old) to a 16 SEER unit, you can expect about 50% electrical savings as pertaining to your cooling costs. In recent years, significant advancements have been made in all types of air conditioning units to improve efficiencies. Trane uses all aluminum coils (both indoor and out) as it was determined over a decade ago that copper is susceptible to formicary corrosion. This corrosion can cause a refrigerant leak and leads to expensive repairs. We carry a full line of high SEER products which are a great example of a smart way to save money by using products that are certified to be energy efficient.
Heat Pumps function the same as an air conditioner in the summer, but they also have a reversing valve and defrost board. This means that the flow of refrigerant can be reversed, allowing the unit to absorb heat from outdoor air into the refrigerant and transfer it into your home. We typically install Heat Pumps in combination with Electric, Propane and Oil furnaces. Depending on your primary heat source, we will determine the economic balance point for your home. This is the temperature at which it is more efficienct to use one heating source over another. For example, for our customers on propane, we usually set the thermostat to turn off the heat pump at about 3 C and switch on the propane furnace. We determine this balance point by taking into account your electricity and fuel costs. We install a thermostat that supports dual fuel operation (Electric/Propane) and connect it to an outdoor temperature sensor. In this way, your heat pump runs for as long as it is financially smart to run, before switching to the less expensive heat source. Different heat pumps have different heat outputs at different outdoor temperatures. Some are Cold Climate, meaning they can provide more heat at lower temperatures. For customers with electric furnaces who install cold climate heat pumps, we typically let that heat pump run most of the winter – as it can run in unison with the electric furnace. On oil or Propane, you can only operate one or the other.
