HVAC System Maintenance Tips to Help it Last Long

Homeowners invest in HVAC systems even though they are expensive investments because they are a necessity throughout the year. Instead of buying a new one to replace the damaged HVAC, it is always wise to take necessary maintenance steps to prevent damage. Helping your heating and cooling systems last as long as possible can save you a lot of money. The following factors usually play a role in reducing the lifespan of your HVAC system: poor initial quality, poor maintenance practices, defective components and an undersized or oversized system. Typically, an air conditioner lasts around 15 years and a furnace around 20 years; however, by following these helpful tips, you can extend the lifespan of your HVAC.

Avoid Putting Off Repairs

When it comes to HVAC repair, not being proactive can cost you a lot. If suddenly your system stops working to its full capacity or produces strange noises, you must take immediate action. Putting off repairs can lead to increased energy bills, escalated HVAC problems, and poor indoor air quality. Problems with HVAC systems rarely resolve themselves on their own. It is more likely that minor issues will worsen over time and may even have a cascading effect, causing other parts to break. This can cause long-term damage to your system, reducing its lifespan. Therefore, the right action is to contact a professional HVAC service technician and resolve the issue.

Get Annual Seasonal Maintenance

Preventative maintenance is planned to ensure that your HVAC system operates efficiently and without unexpected breakdowns throughout the season. This is crucial to improve the performance of your HVAC and save it from costly damages. It is inevitable that a complex piece of mechanical equipment will break down and require maintenance, regardless of how expensive the system is or what the manufacturer promises. The best time to schedule your maintenance is before the peak usage season to ensure the system does not break when it has to work the hardest and you need it the most. The more you care, the longer it will last.

Change Filters Regularly

The easiest way to ensure your system functions correctly throughout the year is to change filters regularly. You should check and change HVAC filters every 2-3 months. Although during annual maintenance or service, the technician replaces the filters; however, once or twice a year is not enough. Your HVAC system has to work harder than usual because of a dirty air filter, which shortens the system's lifespan. Be sure to stock up on the type of filter your system uses and to change it frequently. You can save a lot of money by buying filters from retailers like Walmart or any home improvement store.

Get a Programmable or Smart Thermostat

Switching to a programmable thermostat can plan out your ideal temperature and relieve significant stress. Suppose you are away at work or asleep. In that case, you can use these two types of thermostats to reduce the temperature of your furnace or air conditioner. When you awaken or return home, HVAC will be set to the desired temperature. This way, your HVAC system will no longer have to work extra and will have a longer lifespan. In the past, programmable thermostats were difficult to operate; however, touchscreens have made the process much easier. A programmable thermostat makes it much easier to control your HVAC and reduces extra workload from your HVAC.
